Mixing Old and New: Vintage and Modern Decor Together

January 22, 2015

Example of how to mix modern and vintage decor

It seems that with every new year comes the urge to shake things up
from a décor standpoint, at least in my house. Do you ever feel that
way? Maybe it happens for you at a different time of year.  I know the
change of seasons can do it for some people, myself included. But right
now I'm just plain wanting and needing a change now that the holidays
are over and everything seems so bare.

As much as I love being able to decorate our foyer, I also dread it. You see, I'm

a tough one to pin down when it comes to any kind of dominant decorating style.
Although you can probably guess that something vintage will more often than
not be somewhere in the mix. Like a white, chippy shutter.

Or a thrift store champagne bucket.

On the other end of the spectrum, (and I truly I can't believe I'm saying this)
I really do believe my tastes have begun to include a bit of modern
 interspersed here and there.

Take this vignette for instance. While the shutter and champagne bucket are
vintage, the large metal monogram and the newer globe add a bit of a more
modern vibe to it.

I also like to include natural elements in my décor, like the large moss ball,
as well as topiaries and dried hydrangeas. I also like the texture and vintage
farmhouse feel that burlap brings to things.

Here I juxtaposed a vintage-looking pillow with a modern Ikea faux fur rug.
I think the rug is just playful enough to add some visual interest without
being out of place.

Here's the vignette without the globe. It looks too sparse for my taste, which
is why I added the globe. As I already mentioned, the globe was a relatively
new purchase. I just as easily could have put one of my vintage globes there
as well. The only problem with that was that all my other globes seemed too
large for the arrangement.

Here you can get a better view of the chair. No globe.

Do you ever mix vintage and modern?
Or are you a purist when it comes to decorating?

I am also (gasp!)
beginning to lean
towards the modern
end of the design
spectrum. I think
part of it is getting
older and wanting
things that are more
simple and spare,
sort of like how I
feel about life in
general! And, can
you really go wrong
bringing in some
IKEA?? I say most
definitely not : )

Very pretty, Kathleen! Especially love the burlap pillow with the beautiful French graphic. The fur underneath gives great texture to the vignette - Fabulous!

I mix vintage with modern all the time, I think it makes for a much more interesting vignette. The sweet little globe adds a pop of color and whimsy. Love that A too!

I totally am in a change it up phase! Don't tell anyone, but I am trending away from shabby pink to the more Hollywood regency style like I did in my bedroom...I may even add GOLD...Yikkes Your vignette is perfect!

I love how you're keeping it real--decorating is hard work! Some people may be able to just "throw" things together the first time and it's perfect. Me, it takes me a while to get things "right" and even then, it's often not perfect, it's just kinda nice or pretty okay! I love your display with the globe included--definitely. It's the right size as you say and I love the color.
