How to Transform a Thrifted Basket With Paint

September 18, 2015

I've always loved using baskets as storage solutions. They're attractive and functional at the same time. What's not to like about that? I like it even better when I find an awesome basket for a steal and can spruce it up and put it to good use. Case in point.

Large basket from thift store

How cool is this basket? It reminds me of some baskets seen at Pottery Barn that cost an arm and a leg. But since I don't have an extra arm and leg, I scout for great baskets in thrift shops. My Goodwill came to the rescue with this one for $4.99. That's actually a lot for me to spend on a basket but it was HUGE and in perfect condition. And I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.

I've wanted to "dip" a basket for a while now, and I thought this basket would work. But the paint I wanted to use was in a small jar and I wasn't sure I'd have enough of it to make the whole dipping thing work. So I used a brush. To paint any basket, you'll need to decide which part or parts you want to paint, and then tape it off. I used painter's tape since it comes off so easily. I will admit that it was difficult to get a straight line going all the way around a round basket, but I finally got it right. Then the painting began. I chose to go with a glossy paint for a more modern look.

DecoArt Americana Decor paints and gloss

It's the Americana Décor Maxx Gloss from DecoArt on the left, in hematite. All of the above paints and varnish were part of the fabulous swag bag we received at the Midwest DIY Blogger Roundup in Chicago last month. I gave the basket two good coats.

I love how well it fits into my décor, and looks pretty much like it was professionally painted. Right now it's filled with gray and blue ticking pillows.

Here you can see it next to a Pottery Barn basket I got with a PB gift card  I received last Christmas. That one I use as an end table, and the lid comes off to reveal storage inside!

Great idea. Love the way it changed it from just a basket to a really great basket. Thanks for sharing.

What a thrifty deal you got on the large basket. Love the color! You did such a good job getting a crisp and straight line.
