I've always loved fireplaces. Not only are they great for making cozy fires on cold winter nights -- they're also great places to hang the family's Christmas stockings! But what if you don't have a fireplace?

The good news is that even if you don't have a fireplace mantel to hang your Christmas stockings on, you can always improvise. There's a whole laundry list of ways you can hang them, including:

2. End of the bed/footboard.

3. Side of the stairs/bannister.

5. Ladder.

Today I want to talk to you about using a ladder to hang your Christmas stockings. A few years ago I was over-the-moon thrilled when I found out my husband saved a weathered ladder from our kids' old wooden swing set. No matter he had saved it for kindling! When I saw it on the wood pile I knew I could put it to good use. So I asked him to bring it in and its been in the house ever since. Its first assignment was to function in the master bath as a bath storage ladder

You can find ladders like this at flea markets and barn sales, and they usually don't come cheap. But if you're ever lucky enough to stumble upon one for a fair price, buy it!

In light of the difference of opinion in my house as to which stockings should be "hung by the fire," I realized that I could actually hang two different sets of stockings this year. One set on the mantel and one set on our farmhouse ladder.

Here she is, all dolled up and ready for Christmas. I threw in a white cable knit stocking with pom poms for color contrast, as well as a felt Christmas wreath that has been a favorite of mine for years.

While I can't find anyplace that sells the exact wooden hangers I used, you can purchase some safety grip Christmas stocking hangers which should still do the trick.

The red and white bands at the top of the stockings remind me of grain sacks. And we all know how much I love grain sacks!

And speaking of grain sacks, I absolutely love this grain sack reindeer feed bag. I purchased it from Decor Steals a few years ago and I think it totally adds to the farmhouse look that I absolutely love.

So there you have it. No fireplace? No problem! You can even use a traditional step ladder. Whatever works for you.

That ladder idea is just adorable!!! I really love a fireplace in a house with the stockings all hung in a row. Last year one of my daughters took all four of the kids' Christmas stockings (from when she was growing up) and now they hang at her house. (hoping there is not a sibling fight when they see she has all four of them....lol). xo Diana

Your ladder is very cute with the stockings on it! I would love to know how to make that felt wreath too!

The stocking ladder is terrific, like the footprints of a gigantic Santa.

I love the different ways everyone uses ladders as decor. Wish I had room. Last year I scored a doll sized wooden red one and gifted it to my daughter's elf so she could get into more mischief. Close as I've gotten to a ladder--not counting a recent $3 step stool one!
