Farmhouse China Hutch In Time For Dining Room Renovation!

farmhouse china hutch

About a month ago I attended an estate sale after seeing their pre-sale photos of a farmhouse hutch I thought would be perfect for our dining room. I suppose you can guess what happened next.

I got to the sale shortly after it started, and crossed my fingers that the piece had not already been sold. I guess it was my lucky day since it was still there! I measured it and, lo and behold, it was just the right size. Unfortunately, it cost $250.00 which we all know is WAY too much for this girl. So I sadly walked around just looking at what was left. While walking around I overheard a woman saying that everything would be half price after 12:00 p.m.!

So I went home and talked with my husband about it. He said why not go back at 12:00 and see if it's still there? So I did. But little did I know that there would be a line of 75 people waiting there ahead of me with "tickets" in their hands giving them first dibs. Sigh. I was learning the hard way that this estate sale business can be pretty cutthroat.

Despite the fact that I was not one of the first people allowed back into the sale at noon, once I re-entered I saw that the piece was still there! I grabbed the price ticket and took it to the cashier lickety-split. Then it was just a matter of paying for it and waiting for some guys to help me carry it out of there to my waiting van.

I'm definitely in love. I've wanted a place to display more of my ironstone collection but I'd run out of space. So I gained 4 display shelves as well as some much needed general storage in the bottom of the cabinet behind closed doors.

Oddly enough, it looks like whoever built the hutch added a light on the lower shelf, so that you can highlight your displays. Their choice of light bulb left something to be desired, but we'll see about changing that to something more appropriate down the road. The background of the piece also looks very green in these photos, but it's really quite muted and not that noticeable in person. It adds just the right touch of vintage charm. The main color of the cabinet is white.

Little did I know when I brought this baby home that the timing was perfect. We are about to embark upon a dining room renovation and I think it will be nice to have this piece to work into the new mix, whatever that may be. It's quite different than any of the other pieces that have been in our dining room for the past 20+ years so I'm excited to see where this will lead us.

It looks like I'll be going from a mid-century modern/traditional style to more of a farmhouse vibe that I love! Here you can see a much smaller corner hutch we bought for the foyer in our first house. It doesn't match any of our other dining room furniture, but it physically fit the corner space near the kitchen so that's where its been for the past 13 years.

dining room demolition

In case you haven't noticed, the dining room is in sore need of an update. The wallpaper and custom curtains have seen better days. Normally we'd just keep living with it. Unfortunately, we've had a roof leak that's caused water damage and so far one whole wall has has been removed! (Not to mention other walls in the house that I'll be sharing with you later.)

You can see here where they've also cut into the dining room's tray ceiling. Sigh. We're not sure when the next phase of the reno will begin but suffice it to say that I'll be waiting with bated breath! Even though I'm not happy with how it all came about, I'm still pretty excited about the prospect of the new decorating opportunity that awaits!

So stay tuned for updates to come as we renovate the dining room, as well as a few other areas of the house. I'd love for you to come along for the ride and of course give me your opinions as to paint colors and general farmhouse and vintage style! My goal is to create a warm, comfortable, farmhouse feel without spending a lot of money in the process. I'm giddy just thinking about it!

Well, that's it for today, friends.

What fun, Kathleen--looking forward to watching you redo your dining room. You got a real steal on your new corner cupboard. Hurrah for you! I bought mine at a garage sale a long time ago and when we got it home discovered that it was the perfect color for our kitchen and the wine color on the inside shows of my ironstone beautifully :)

What a great find! I'm so happy for you that it was still there after 12pm and that no one grabbed it before you!!! Yeah! I love old cabinets. A few months ago I toured an open house here in Texas and this 1960's home had lovely built-ins. This house was funky in its additions but it would have been fun to pick up the cabinets as they were pulled out {seems a lot of people want "modern"}.

Enjoy your "new" cabinet,
Barb :)
