Easy DIY Pom Pom Garland and Tree Skirt Secret

DIY pom poms white yarn darning needle

I don't know about you, but I've been seeing white fluffy pom poms everywhere. I see them in craft stores, home decor stores and on many major websites. I've also noticed the prices. Which leads me to today's post -- how to easily make your own pom pom garland. Notice how easily is the operative word! Not only that but it's incredibly inexpensive....AND I share a tree skirt secret you won't want to miss!

I've never been one to sit by the fire and string popcorn and cranberry garland for the Christmas tree. No, I tried it years ago with my sister and I practically needed a new fingertip by the time we were through (too many needle pokes, ouch!). But I do love the way a nontraditional garland looks on the tree. Once I realized that I had some Target Bullseye Playground crafty goodness in my stash from last year, the game was on to create my own pom pom garland.

DIY Pom Pom Garland Tutorial

Materials

yarn for stringing
(outside wrapper of the yarn I used -- Caron United -- shown in above photo)

package of premade pom poms

scissors

measuring tape (not pictured)

embroidery/darning needle (with a large enough eye to thread yarn through)

white Target mini pom poms

Okay, so I cheated. I bought premade pom poms! That's what makes this DIY E-A-S-Y. I'm all for anything that's inexpensive and makes my DIY experience easier. I did actually make some other larger pom poms myself for another project and I'll be sharing them with you soon.

Sewology Darning Needles Set of 7 Size 14/18

First off, I divided the pom poms into two groups (for two different trees). I had three packs of 15 pom poms each totalling 45 pom poms. That left me with 23 for one garland and 22 for the other garland. Then I just threaded my darning needle with white yarn to match my pom poms and got to work poking the needle through the middle of each and every pom pom!  The needle went through quite easily, so no bloody fingers this time!

Each string of yarn was 148 inches, or approximately 12 1/2 feet long (based on the size of my 4 foot tall pencil trees that had a 21 inch diameter at their widest) and the pom poms were set approximately 6 inches apart from each other. I was not totally precise in measuring, I just eyeballed it after laying it all on the ground. I didn't have to individually tie off each pom pom as I went since the yarn was thick enough to keep them from freely sliding around. They stayed wherever I put them. Once I had all the measurements figured out and finished making the first one, the second garland took me all of 10 minutes!  And voila!

You can see here where I went all out and actually made my own large white pom poms for the top of each tree. I'm SO happy that I finally got to use my little prepackaged pom poms! The entire project only cost me $3.00 for the pom poms since I already had the white yarn and darning needle. Totally not bad for a quick and easy project that packs a pretty punch! I used white for my white flocked trees but you can do this with any color for any occasion!

You can see the obvious pom pom theme I've got going in the foyer. I'll be sharing how I made that pom pom wreath soon! And did you notice my snow white faux fur tree skirts?

Dollar store microfiber cloth

Faux fur is so incredibly "in" right now -- from pillows to rugs to throws to....tree skirts! I've seen them in the stores and online for a pretty penny.  Mine, on the other hand, were incredibly inexpensive. (To be fair, though, the expensive ones were full-size tree skirts and mine are obviously more on the mini side.) Still, you'll never guess what they really are and where I got them!

Dollar Store super soft microfiber cloth

When I saw these super soft microfiber cloths at my local Dollar Store last year I had a feeling I could use them for something. My first idea was to make a pillow (which I still intend to make). But I was just too busy to bother doing anything with them at the time. Fast forward to this year. Once I strung the pom pom garland on my two flocked, pencil sized Christmas trees I had an epiphany -- those microfiber cloths would be perfect as tree skirts!

And I still believe that to be true. It's almost like they were made for this project! In all honesty you could probably sew a few of them together and make a full sized tree skirt -- for way less money than anything you could buy in a store! In the alternative, you could always order one online that's already made, like this Faux Fur Christmas Tree Skirt.

I just gently wrapped two microfiber cloths each around the burlap covering at the bottom of each tree and let them fall where they may. I think the olive buckets make for the perfect tree stands as well!

I've since added some lights and some of my favorite ornaments, including some I made this year that I'll try and share with you over the next week or so. So many projects and ideas to share -- December is always my most productive month from a creative standpoint. But can you blame me?

Well, that's it until next time, friends!

Aw, that wasn't much of a cheat. Your garlands looks so soft and adorable. Love how you have your foyer decorated. Great score on the Dollar Store "fur." They make great little tree skirts!

I don't think I've ever seen pom pom garlands; they are adorable! Will be on the lookout for pompoms on sale (or with a coupon!). The matching trees with skirts are adorable and the foyer is very nicely done.
