God Bless Our Mortgaged Home salt pepper shakers occupied Japan terrier puppies Otagiri hen chick butter dish

Welcome to Thrill of the Hunt #72, friends! I've got another one of my eclectic mixes to share with you today so sit back, relax and enjoy. Two of my finds were acquired in a neighboring town's thrift store, while another find was picked up at a local pop-up estate sale. Wonder what that is? Read on to find out!

I'm still on the salt and pepper train, so you can bet that I'm picking up vintage salt and pepper shakers wherever I go. To wit, one set of 1950's-era porcelain made-in-Japan salt and pepper shakers.

I knew as soon as I saw these two that they were a blast from the past. Not my past, mind you -- I think they're a bit before my time. But I love the sentiment written on them. And I do remember a black iron trivet of my mother's that had the same words on it.

One has a pinkish roof with 3 holes.

The other has a blue roof and two holes. I've always wondered about the hole difference -- one versus two. How do you do it? I put salt in the one with three holes and pepper in the one with two holes. I've researched this and found varied answers as to what's the proper etiquette. I think it's really whatever you find is best for you and your taste (and the size of your actual salt and pepper granules).

I love the detail on these tiny houses, right down to the fireplaces in the back and shutters on the front windows. While there is no maker's mark per se, the sets I've found for sale all indicate that they were made in 1950's-era Japan. God Bless Our Mortgaged Home1950's Salt and Pepper Shakers are SOLD.

This butter dish stopped me in my tracks. Number one: it's very farmhouse and number two: it's vintage! And number three: who doesn't need butter, you know what I'm saying? I believe it's made by Otagiri in Japan.

I especially love the pale green shawl tied around the momma hen's neck.

I found an identical butter dish on eBay dated 1982, with different paint colors, for $25.00. Otagiri Sitting Hen and Chick Butter Dish is SOLD.

I do believe this is the sweetest of the bunch -- a vintage porcelain terrier with puppies in a basket.

I picked it up for my son at that pop-up estate sale I mentioned earlier. I've mentioned this type of sale before in other Thrill of the Hunt posts. There's a little old mom and pop general store nearby that closed down years ago. After sitting empty for a few years, someone had the brilliant idea that it could be used to sell vintage and antique goods on a seasonal basis.

We never know the next date for a sale. It's always a surprise, until about one week before when they put a sign in the window -- "sale soon!" The sellers are actually comprised of a number of different "estates" that are hoping to unload some of their wares during the three-day sale. I'm usually there with bells on when it opens on day one. It never fails to please. (I've got a bunch more goodies -- of a very different nature than these -- from this particular sale that are just waiting to be revealed!)

On the bottom of the figurine it says "Made in Occupied Japan." This is a sign that the piece was made during the allies' occupation of Japan after World War II, some time between 1947 and 1954. As such, it's a great collectible. Occupied Japan Porcelain Terrier With Pups in Basket Figurine 1940's-1950's is AVAILABLE.

All three finds will eventually end up in my shop. In the meantime, if you're interested now, just leave a comment about it and I'll get right back to you.

Well, that's it until next time, friends!

Enjoyed seeing your finds! I have tried NOT to succumb to S&P shakers except for white milk glass ones and figurines (usually Japan) and especially Dutch boys and girls. And Hazel Atlas ones like my Mom's kitchen (large) salt shaker. At least it's a small collection! Love the hen and chicken for your Farmhouse kitchen. Would be great in a hens on nests collection, too!
