Are You A Splurger Or A Saver?

July 1, 2014

As a thrifty DIY home-décor blogger, I was asked to participate in Credit Card Insider's weekly "Splurge vs. Save" campaign. To that end, I'm going to resurrect portions of a post I wrote back in 2012 because I think it's one of the best representations of how I am a saver and not a splurger!

WOULDN'T YOU AGREE???

First off, meet my fabulous Frenchy mega wall clock.

This thing is HUGE, people -- 23'' in diameter.  I absolutely love it!  I found it in the Home Decorators Collection catalog for $29.00 and free shipping.  $29.00!!!  It was out of stock {no wonder} and I had to wait a few months for it to come in but it was totally worth it.  Today they're charging $40.00, which is still a good deal when you compare it to prices like Ballard's and Pottery Barn. Look.

Next up is something that I had thought was so passe'. Then I see a resurgence of them and I'm in love. Topiaries.

Goodwill

Are you ready for theirs?

Next up is my all-time-favorite Parsons Chair.

Goodwill

{Yes, you read that right.}

Now theirs.

Uh, I just saved $275.00. Here's a small (but satisfying nonetheless) home decor item that I'm very happy I broke down and bought.

Hobby Lobby 50% off sale.

Theirs.

And last but not least, I've always been amazed at the price of designer name corkboards and chalkboards. I've made both, but today I'll just show you one to give you an idea.

Frame: Goodwill. Corkboard and jewelry my own.

Yes, there's even more I could share but frankly I'm pooped.  Maybe another post should be in the making?  I WILL say that it's very satisfying to know that you've saved so much money, and created something beautiful for your home at the same time.

I hope I've inspired some of you to get out there and find some thrifty bargains.  And they don't have to be the spitting image of Ballard Designs' decor.  They just have to be something that you love.

Well, that's it until next time, friends!

Oh goodness, yes, I never splurge on things that I can make for a fraction. I am only a splurge when it is on something I can't make, like a new mattress lol!

You go girl! Why pay more for some of these home decor items when you can find it somewhere else or make it for so much less. I like the way you think. I agree with Carol, I wouldn't attempt to make a mattress.

You are taking the right path. Hard to believe the prices "they" charge on so many things. Would I pay their price ? No!
You definitely did good.

I see a Ballard Designs ad right at the bottom of this page. Little do they know that you have clean-bowled them with your thrifty yet amazingly beautiful finds :)

I am definitely frugal and have furnished most of our home from auctions, Craigslist and thrift stores. You found some great things!

Great finds! You always amaze me! I love the chair- only $4! Wow! You found some fabulous pieces for rock bottom prices!

Oh you and I think JUST alike! I'd much rather find a way to get something cheaper if I can. I love your finds. They look just as good as the more expensive items. I think the more expensive items are just flat overpriced! I wish I could find good things at our Goodwill. I never do.

Great repost, Kathleen! I have to say I think like you, too, and have done the same many times. Especially when it comes to the Ballard Design items! Great find on that Parson's chair. I remember shopping around quite a bit for the one I eventually bought from Target online just to find the best price.

Great frugal looks that are as good or better than the design sites. Thanks for sharing at Home Sweet Home.

Wow, you done good, girl! My problem is that I seldom even see the expensive stuff (and don't always read the fine print, i.e., price tags in the magazines caz I know I'm not able to afford them) so I don't realize how well some of you bloggers have done! I am the first one to appreciate a bargain...brought up that way due to necessity and STILL think that way. Thanx for showing us how it's done!
