Thrill of the Hunt #41

February 26, 2017

Welcome to Thrill of the Hunt #41 where I share some of my recent thrift store finds with you! I hope that my thrifting sagas provide you with inspiration to get out there and look for some of your own thrill of the hunt finds! So are you ready? Let's go!

Okay so no surprises here. You all know I've become a gumball machine junkie. So when I saw this LARGE gumball machine at Goodwill for a few bucks you know I had to pick it up. To what end is anybody's guess. Probably another Christmas snow globe but maybe I'll just go all crazy and fill it with nuts, who knows? I think my husband would love that.

Now this one's a complete mystery. I picked it up at Goodwill for 50 cents, thinking it had to have some story behind it. The white you see on top is just a remnant of the price tag (enter Goo Gone).

The fact that it had this tag on it made me think it was probably vintage and probably a collectible.

But after a little research I have come up empty-handed as to what it is. I feel like I should devote an entire post to it like my friend Tuula at Thrifty Rebel Vintage who has a series going entitled "What the Heck Is It?"

If any of you have any ideas I'd love to hear them. I was thinking maybe it's a container (military issued maybe?) for a deck of cards, or maybe a pack of cigarettes? Otherwise I'm stumped.

Okay now these are just plain fun. I started collecting vintage cake plates when I thought we were going to be moving. I had a whole kitschy plate wall planned out. Good news: we never moved. Bad news: I'm stuck with a bunch of state plates. So why not add to the collection?

We have Niagra Falls.

As well as Utah.

Kentucky.

Washington state.

South Dakota.

And Washington, D.C. I've been to Niagra Falls, Washington State and Washington D.C, (I lived there when I was going to law school.) So some of these have a bit of sentimental value for me. Add to them at least 5 others I've accumulated and I'd say I have quite a collection at this point. Now if I could just find a wall big enough to put them on......

Well, that's it until next time!

Interesting box...don't have a clue what it is. Also like your plates...come on now... you said you're stuck with them?? Too pretty to say that! Yes you inspired me to visit my own local thrift, but whether I get there or not is another matter. LOL

I was thinking "cigarette pack" protector, if it's the right size. And it must be, since you mentioned that. Cards would be another possibility, so i think you have it already figured out!

Great find on the plates & gumball! I'm interested to see what you'll do with the mystery piece ;)

The mystery piece is quite interesting. I never find gum ball machines even though I'm always on the outlook for one. Love your state plates.

Love that metal container Kathleen! I immediately thought of cards, but who knows. It's very interesting. I've never seen anything like it. Thanks so much for the shout out. The cake plates are so pretty!

Hi. I think the metal piece looks like a bracket you would use to build a sawhorse. Kathy

The trouble with an open concept house is that I don't have enough walls to hang all the plates/pictures that I want to! Those plates would be lovely anywhere (my WalMart and yard sale Monets cover my bathroom walls!) With something that small, you can get away with hanging them on a common pin stuck into sheetrock (I use my needlenose pliers and angle the pin slightly upward). Hole covers with toothpaste if you remove it! Do you already have a rogue's gallery of relatives on your stairwell wall? Up next to the ceiling instead of crown molding would get them out of basketball range! I always wanted a gumball machine; a winter snow globe is a great idea. I'd have all my change gone if it held nuts! Enforced savings account!
