When NOT To Upcycle: Thrifted Gold Sunburst Mirror

July 27, 2017

Sunburst mirrors have been popular for some time now. I've always wanted one, but didn't want to pay an exorbitant price. Nor did I feel like DIY-ing one. So I happily picked one up at my local Goodwill for next to nothing (99 cents), and planned to put it to work as part of my living room and dining room renovation project. I also figured I could use it as my monthly Thrift Store Decor Upcycle Challenge project.

Thrift Store Decor Upcycle Challenge

The Rules:

  • Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
  • There's no monthly theme.
  • There's no budget to stick to.

Originally I was going to repaint it with gold spray paint to make it brighter. But the more I looked at it, the more I realized that it was fine, as is, in its original state. Our walls will soon be a very pale shade of gray that I think will look great with a gold sunburst mirror hanging on it. And if not, well then, I can whip out the can of white spray paint lol!

I'm usually the type who sees something in a thrift store and right away just knows that it has to come home with me -- for some TLC and perhaps a whole new life. However, I'm learning to take a breath and sit back initially before rushing in to "fix" something that might just not need to be "fixed." Or at least maybe not in the way that I had thought.

I admit that I'll be staying open to the possibility of a white paint makeover somewhere down the line, but for now I just want to appreciate it for what it is: a gold sunburst mirror.

I couldn't help but take some close-ups of my lavender plant. I had two, but one died while I was on vacation. Boo-hoo. However, this one is doing just fine!

It's kind of funny that I can't stand the smell of lavender, but I love how it looks. Weird, I know.

I figure I can either hang the sunburst mirror, or position it on a mantel or shelf, like in these photos. I know this challenge was supposed to share an upcycle, but I really wanted to put it out there that sometimes it's ok to just let it be. I mean, it's really all in the thrill of the hunt, right?

Well that's it for now.

I agree, there are times when upcycle is not necessary and your starburst mirror is so beautiful.

It's so true that not everything needs fixed! I like the gold sunburst mirror just as it is too.

That's really a cool piece you picked up for next to nothing! Impressed! I like it just as it is too. To me, it looks more MCM painted gold.

Funny you should say that about lavender....I don't like the smell of it either.

I totally agree that the mirror is just perfect how it is. I love how you've styled it also with the potted plants.

Yep, I'm not sure you could have made this more fantastic. Good eye to see the beauty, you scored with that one :)

It looks good just the way it is. And as you say you can always paint it later on. I really like the vignette you created.

I am so glad that you chose to leave it alone! Not everything should be changed! It's very pretty!
