Farmhouse Kitchen Corner With Fresh Produce Chalkboard Sign

Do you have trouble storing fresh fruits and vegetables like I do? It's always a struggle, based on the produce I have at the time and the storage solutions on hand. But now I've found a solution that works for me and my farmhouse kitchen. Throw in a DIY "Fresh Produce" chalkboard sign and I'm in love.

I'd seen farmhouse two-tier wire storage basket solutions in catalogs and online and I was unimpressed -- mainly because they cost more than I was willing to pay on a budget -- $33.99 is just one example.

Lucky for me that I came across the exact same thing at a local pop-up estate sale. I have to laugh when I think back on how I hesitated to pay $4.99. But I'm so glad I did! I really do think it's exactly the same as the one above that costs $33.99. Score!

Months later I came across this Kirkland's rustic farmhouse chalkboard for a steal on clearance.

Just look at that hardware! I knew then and there that it was meant to be a sign for my farmhouse kitchen corner. Stick with me if you're interested in how I personalized that below.

Gourmet Basics Harbor 3-Tier Market Basket

Last but not least, here is the three-tier farmhouse wire storage basket I came across serendipitously at Costco. I found it selling online for $119.99. Um, no thank you. I bought it at Costco for less than $30.00.

One thing I like about these over sized wire baskets is that they're removable, so you can still use them elsewhere even if you don't want to display the whole stand. It's just nice to be able to gather all my fruits and vegetables in one place and have it look aesthetically pleasing at the the same time. As for how I personalized the chalkboard with my reverse chalk transfer method, read on.

How To Decorate A Farmhouse Chalkboard With The Reverse Chalk Transfer Method

Start with your brand spanking new chalkboard and a big old piece of sidewalk chalk. As much as I'd love to write on that pristine board, I have to restrain myself. For if I write on it before "curing" it, whatever I write on it first will remain almost engraved on there for posterity. So how to cure it?

Just like this. Take that big piece of sidewalk chalk and swipe it back and forth across the whole board, using the entire side of the piece of chalk. Feel free to coat it on thick. Then erase it all away and you're left with a cured board.

Once you decide what you'd like your sign to say, choose a font or fonts and play around with them in Word until you get the right look and size you're going for.

The words Fresh Produce were done in Dollie Script and at size 300. Print out your words and then cut the paper out around them so you can set up the words in their proper places on the chalkboard. You can use painter's tape to secure the paper down once you're ready to trace.

Here you can see the back of the paper with the words Picked Daily printed on it. As with all the words or images, you'll turn the paper over and then swipe the fat chalk across the page, making sure to coat the back of the words/images with thick chalk powder. Flip the paper over and tape it into place, then trace over the FRONT of the words with a sharpened pencil.

This is what it looked like after I used the reverse chalk transfer method on the first words, Fresh Produce. Now all I had to do was trace over the lines with a sharpened piece of chalk.

Did you know you can sharpen chalk? Well, you can, if your sharpener is wide enough. The sharper the point, the cleaner your lines, and words or images, will be.  So are you curious?

Here's my completed produce sign. Okay, maybe I embellished it just a bit with the computer.

Here it is for real.

Not that I can ever get a decent picture of this corner of the kitchen, but rest assured I'm thrilled with the chalkboard sign and the produce storage solution.

Well, that's it until next time, friends!

What a great corner in your kitchen. Great way to encourage kids to grab a piece of fruit for a snack! Very envious for such an area! In my next life I want a bigger kitchen--with more sunny windows and open floor space! And levelfloors! Praying for your continued recovery!
