And the chinoiserie saga continues. I'm really on a roll (no pun intended) with these DIY chinoiserie projects. This time it's a seasonal one: DIY chinoiserie Easter eggs. After DIYing my own chinoiserie pumpkins and chinoiserie vases I felt totally prepared to take on this project. And you can, too.

How To Make Chinoiserie Easter Eggs

Supplies

5. wax paper or parchment paper

Start by cutting up your cocktail napkins. For an Easter egg transformation I cut smaller pieces of napkin as opposed to larger pieces like I used for my chinoiserie vase. This is why having precision crafting scissors is so important. I've come to rely on mine for all my decoupage projects.

I began by cutting up each square (there are 4 squares to each flattened out napkin) of the napkin into 4" long by 1/4" wide strips.

Then I cut each strip into halves. You might not be able to see it in the above photo but the strips have been cut in half at their midpoint.

Using your flat-edged paint brush, apply some Mod Podge onto the surface of the egg. Then gently and carefully apply a piece of cut-up napkin strip to the area. Once positioned, you should go over it with more Mod Podge for a finishing protective coat. Don't worry about wrinkles. Just smooth the wet napkin gently with your paint brush as best you can and let it dry.

Continue all the way around the egg until you have the whole thing covered with napkin. You will probably end up with some small blank spots here and there which you can fill in with small pieces of napkin later.

NOTE: I've read MANY tutorials on how to do this and most, if not all, tell you to pull the napkin's three layers apart and only use the top layer. Layers two and three are white.

But I believe two layers are optimum because: 1. It's easier to work with two layers (less likely to rip or tear). 2. It's less wrinkly. 3. Overall coverage and color vibrancy is much better.

You can place the egg in progress onto some parchment or wax paper while it dries. You can also place them in an old empty egg carton or porcelain faux egg carton that will cradle them gently while they dry.

After decoupaging the napkin strips all the way around, I then covered the top and bottom of the egg. I cut the pieces of napkin for the top and bottom of the egg into rounds rather than strips since those areas are round-shaped.

My most detailed description by far of how to do this decoupage chinoiserie technique can be found in my How To Make Chinoiserie Pumpkins post. You can always refer to those instructions if you still have any questions.

I also couldn't think of a better place to display them than in my barn sale chinoiserie porcelain basket.
