How To Decorate A Chandelier For Christmas

November 22, 2021

Today I'm sharing how to decorate a vintage thrift store candle chandelier for Christmas, including how I salvaged it from my local Goodwill store!

There are some things I come across while thrifting that will always make me look twice. One of those things is a chandelier with crystals.

Lucky for me that while breezing through one of my local Goodwill stores I stumbled across an ornate, romantic-looking metal candle chandelier with crystals!

You can see the orange price tag still wrapped around one of the wires. It cost me $4.99.

It was pretty much perfect -- but for the fact that it had been painted pale green. From what I can tell the original color was probably black.

But the green would never do, so I got to work with my favorite Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint in Linen White.

I'd write a tutorial explaining how to paint it -- but it was too simple.  I just used a paint brush and put on two coats of paint.

However, in order to paint it, I had to hang it from another chandelier -- because painting it while it was sitting on a table would be pretty awkward since you can't exactly put it down flat.

Once it was painted, I knew exactly how I wanted to hang it. Since there weren't any spots available for hanging on the ceiling anywhere around the house, I remembered I had a metal bird cage stand that would make a great spot on which to hang a chandelier.

If you want the vintage charm of a candle chandelier but don't want to wait to stumble upon one at the thrift store like I did, Amazon has a pretty inexpensive crystal chandelier which I LOVE.

I bought this bird cage eight years ago at Michigan's Longest Garage Sale. When I bought it it was brass. I quickly painted it white and fell in love. Over the years I've used it all around my home in many different ways. But this time the bird cage had to go!

And what better to replace it with than my freshly painted vintage candle chandelier? Obviously, the white paint gave the candle chandelier a much needed transformation. But I knew it needed the Christmas touch -- in the form of tiny wreaths placed around each individual candle holder.

I started with a retro bottle brush wreath, followed by a more delicate -- wait for it -- holiday napkin ring wreath with red berries. They complimented each other perfectly.

And the candles? Why, Dollar Tree battery-operated taper candles, of course. I am so glad I bought them when I first saw them because I haven't seen them since. As much as I love to see beautiful Christmas decor on Instagram, I have to say that sometimes it makes me crazy to see people who put real -- not LED-- candles on their Christmas fireplace laced with garlands both real and faux and LIGHT THEM. It gives me agita to see it.

Call me an alarmist, but I'd rather be safe. Which is why I was thrilled to find those battery-operated taper candles at my local Dollar Tree. Apparently, they're on back order online from Dollar Tree, but Amazon has some amazing flickering remote-controlled LED taper candles you'd probably enjoy even more.

This year I decided to decorate with a vintage, French-inspired Christmas theme.

My goal was to keep it pretty simple and minimalistic, which is not something I'm typically known for.

It felt good to be able to concentrate on a few focal points, like the cathedral arches and the fireplace.

In addition to the simple wreath I added a frosted pine garland combined with two lamb's ear garlands

One quintessential French touch is the brass candlesticks and taper candles on the mantel. And I adore adding jumbo sized sugar pine cones wherever I can.

You know I threaded in some fairy lights as well.

These stockings from Hearth & Hand at Target add just the right cozy feel to the room. If you can't find any at Target, Amazon has some really pretty white knit Christmas stockings as well.

I still have to decorate our farmhouse corbel shelf above the bed, but for now, between the lanterns, the LED tapers on my newly refurbished candle chandelier and the fairy lights on the mantel, it's become a warm and cozy spot, especially at night! I love my transformed vintage candle chandelier and overall I'm really pleased with how the Christmas master bedroom turned out. I love having a faux fireplace to decorate for the seasons!

Well, that's it until next time, friends!
