How To Make An Upcycled Ladder Vertical Flower Garden

June 13, 2022

Any time I can upcycle perfectly good wood that's been left over from other projects, I'm happy to do so. This time I upcycled two wooden ladders from our kids' back yard playset into a unique vertical flower garden.

six rung salvaged playset ladder

My husband salvaged these two “ladders” from our kids’ back yard playset when it was time to finally take the whole thing down. They’ve been sitting out in the yard for the past few years just waiting for me to do something with them.

When I came across this planter bracket at Walmart I knew I’d found my project- a vertical flower garden!

To mix things up I later picked up this flower pot holder plant ring

three Dollar Tree garden signs

I was giddy when I found these garden signs at Dollar Tree. I knew they’d be perfect for the vertical flower garden project.

My husband helped the project along by drilling holes for the screws and then installing the hardware. After that I got to work adding the plants.

I think the Dollar Tree garden signs are absolutely perfect for this project.

I hung the third garden sign on the side of one of my raised garden beds that sits just to the left of these plant stands.

He also screwed the vertical gardens into our split rail fence to assure that they would not fall over from a stiff wind (which we seriously get quite often in these parts).

I used all terra cotta pots for a rustic farmhouse look.

I planted petunias, impatiens, vinca vine …..

Calibrachoa is a great trailing plant for vertical gardens.

Calibrachoa. . . . I love how they trail from the pot.

Torenia (they look like trumpets) and scarlet verbena. . . . I was excited to find these two flowering plants to add to the display. I've never planted either of these before but so far so good.

More impatiens and vinca vine. . . .

And petunias and vinca vine. . . . .

As long as the weathered wood holds up I will continue to use them for my vertical flower garden. And because of where they’re placed we’ll see them every time we pull into the driveway. I’m hoping the petunias really start to fill out like they usually do. Then we’ll pretty much have a wall of flowers to greet us whenever we come home. Win - win.

Not bad for some salvaged wood from an old playset!

And for those of you who'd rather buy a ready-made vertical garden there are many different types out there -- from vertical herb garden planter boxes to a 5-tier stackable vertical garden to a mobile raised bed with lattice trellis.

Well, that's it for today, friends!

Those look awesome, Kathleen! It looks like you screwed them to the existing fence for good stability, smart. I always use Miracle Gro bloom booster when I plant my annuals for the first few weeks, and they take off. Love the Garden of Weedin' sign, lol. Isn't that the truth?

I really enjoyed seeing your project. I love seeing stuff upcycled. The only think I dislike about clay pots is that they dry out so quickly. PLEASE show us these flowers again before frost so we can see how well they filled out the pots! Kathy A
