It looks as though swan decor popularity is at an all-time high these days. And it's no secret that I'm a swan lover extraordinaire -- so that's good news for me! I recently added two chalkware-like swan planters to my collection and today I'm sharing how I styled them along with some helpful tips for future styling as well.
I've wanted swan planters like these for a long time, so I've basically been in heaven and having fun styling them for the first time.

What I really mean when I say I've wanted them for a long time is that I've wanted a large vintage indoor/outdoor ceramic or cement swan planter for a long time. Unfortunately, they (and even their replicas) are super expensive, so I've never purchased one. However, I did find some smaller artisanal weathered white swan planters for a reasonable price -- so I just went for it and became the proud owner of two of them! (It didn't hurt that I had a gift certificate that covered the cost.)
I was floored by the truly vintage look of these swan planters. Distressed paint is always a good indicator of vintage style. And they're actually the perfect size for mantel decor or even in a tablescape!
Additionally, the carved flowers on the body of the swans were a lovely detail.
HOW TO STYLE ARTISANAL WEATHERED WHITE SWAN PLANTERS
1. PLANTERS and 2. VASES
I call them "planter vases" because they can function as both planters and vases. While they're certainly not as large as most outdoor swan planters, you can still fit a small potted plant inside each of them, or a glass container filled with water for a lovely fresh flower display!
I used my smallest mason jars filled with water to act as vases for the super fragrant fresh lilacs from the yard.
While the jars stood out a bit taller than the opening, it was not a problem because I used so many lilacs that they easily covered up any glass that might be peeking out.
I placed two swan taper candle holders, one on each side of the artisanal weathered white swan planter vases, to complete the mantel display.
It doesn't have to be lilacs -- it can be any type of flower, including faux flowers!
For now I'm going to take advantage of the fresh lilacs, and I can't wait to fill them with fresh flowers from the garden this summer.
3. BOOKENDS
One way to keep bookend decor fresh is to use unique or unusual items as bookends. To create my swan bookends I filled each of them with faux greenery (like a planter), adding a more natural element to the overall display.
The weathered white swan's distressed look really compliments the vintage style deconstructed books.
4. Candle Holders
While I wouldn't place wax burning candles directly inside the weathered white swan planters (since they're made out of magnesium - similar to chalkware figurines - which may be susceptible to catching fire and/or melting), I would place small glass votives directly inside to create a cozy glow.
Two white swans filled with tea lights, and an ironstone pitcher of fresh garden peonies, made the perfect centerpiece.
They looked right at home on my Pioneer Woman jute crochet table runner from Wal-Mart.
I think the pink crocheted edging on the table runner looks beautiful with the pink and purple peonies.
The ironstone pitcher is filled with gorgeous peony blooms from the garden -- some of my favorite flowers besides hydrangeas and ranunculus.
I doubt the heat generated by such a small flame would be a hazard. HOWEVER, using battery-operated candles (tea lights, perhaps) might be the safest way to go! You can place a small item underneath to give it height. I used some battery-operated remote controlled tea lights.
Like the votives, even the tea lights emit a nice glow.
Well, that's it for today, friends!
