Fake, or faux, cakes are a great way to decorate your space in alignment with the seasons or holidays. I've decorated many a fake cake for various holidays, but this time I wanted to create a fake cake especially for the summer months.
And what better cake to make for summer decor than a fake lemon lavender cake?

I love lemons and anything with lemons in it -- or on it for that matter. So it follows that I would also love a fake lemon lavender cake.
While my previous method of making a fake cake was shared in How to Make a Fake Naked Cake, I recently saw a Youtube video of someone making one a bit differently, and I was inspired to try their method. So here goes, with my own twist on it.
SUPPLIES FOR MAKING A FAKE LEMON LAVENDER CAKE
1. Round cardboard gift box (mine is from Dollar Tree) sans lid
2. Spackle (Dollar Tree used to sell but I can't find it there now)
3. Yellow acrylic paint (mine from Dollar Tree)
4. Disposable piping bags (some Dollar Trees carry them)
5. Icing piping accessories #1M star tip (or larger)
6. Faux lemon slices (or any other fruit toppings of your choice)
7. Disposable bowl/plate/spoon (makes life easier, not shown)
8. Icing spatula (mine from Dollar Tree)
9. Drinking glass for icing bag set-up (not shown)
10. Faux lavender stems (not shown)
HOW TO MAKE A FAKE LEMON CAKE
1. Add some yellow paint, a little bit at a time, to your spackle, and mix together in a bowl until it reaches your desired shade.
NOTE: Depending on your paint and how much you add to the spackle mixture, it can end up becoming quite thin and runny. I found it best to stop before it got to the runny stage. (However, also see step #4 below regarding consistency.)
2. Using a spatula, spread the yellow spackle all over the cardboard gift box just like you would if it were a real cake.
3. For the piping, fill your icing bag (already set up with with the star tip) with more yellow (or plain white) spackle by placing the empty bag inside a drinking glass, pulling the edges of the bag up and over the outside of the glass and then spooning into the bag as much spackle as you think you'll need.
4. Then pipe away to your heart's content! If you've ever decorated a cake or cupcakes, it's exactly the same thing -- only it's spackle instead of real icing!
NOTE: I used the #1M star tip for piping, as that's the size I saw being recommended. However, as you can see from the above photo, my stars came out looking more like blobs! Maybe my caulk/icing mixture was too thick? In retrospect, I'd recommend that you have at least one larger tip on hand in case you run into the same problem I did. You can always just scrape off the blob and start again with the larger tip!
5. Add your faux lemon slices onto the top of the cake before the piped icing dries.
6. Once the top is finished and dry, just place the lavender (or any other favorite favorite) faux flowers on top of your faux lemon lavender cake. (Flowers can also be used to camouflage any sadly shaped piping fails!) And voila!
7. You can display your fake lemon lavender cake on a cake plate or pedestal, and/or under a glass cloche.
However you display it, it will definitely add some bright summer charm to your home!
I'd say it almost looks real enough to eat!
I can already tell that my less than stellar ROSES will bother me to no end. (Although truly, no one will be looking at your fake cake as closely or as critically as you will.) Guess that means I'll be making another fake lemon lavender cake! But that's ok - it was a fun, fairly inexpensive and relatively easy to make craft. And next time I'll be sure to have a larger piping tip on hand, just in case.
