Welcome to another installment in my Mindful Christmas Home series featuring DIY red gtartan plaid Christmas candles. Ralph Lauren Christmas decor is having a resurgence these days, and my candles fit the bill perfectly. This decor feature is not new to me -- I created some similar seasonal LED candles in the past. But I was amazed when I came across some overpriced red tartan plaid Christmas candles online.
Check out their price and how I created a work-around below! Simple to create and beautiful to behold.

Yup. $59 for three LED candles. This copycat was easier than easy. Just like I did in my DIY Buffalo Plaid LED Candles post, I looked in my stash for something I could use to cover my candles and transform them into holiday decor.
Easy enough: Dollar Tree Christmas plaid wrapping paper I already had on hand. Dollar Tree paper is your best bet since it's likely to be thinner than other wrapping papers, which makes it easier for the flame to show through. (Print tissue paper would work, too.)
While I have a few different types of LED pillar candles, I chose to use my LED candles that are surrounded by glass, similar to a real burning candle in a glass candle holder. I got them for less than $10 each at Michael's on sale.
To cover the candles, I placed them onto the inside of the paper (which has a handy grid to help with cutting straight), making sure to line up the top of the candle with the straight edge of the wrapping paper. Then I made a pencil mark on the paper at the bottom edge of the candle holder.
After rolling the candle holder in the paper for full coverage, I made another pencil mark to show me where to cut vertically.
Finally, I cut the paper according to the pencil lines. Using double sided tape, I attached one long edge of the paper to the candle, then wrapped the paper all the way around where I used more double sided tape to secure the paper in place.
And voila. All done with things I already owned. That's the best way to create seasonal decor if you can manage it.
The chinoiserie ginger jar print is from Wal-Mart (last year) and the gold Christmas tree candles are from World Market.
The glow is even cozier in the dark, but I took pictures during the day because they always come out better than at night.
Best part: you can take the paper off after the holidays and go back to plain candles. Truly no muss, no fuss.
I will say that using tissue paper rather than wrapping paper will give you a brighter glow since tissue paper is a thinner barrier. I used wrapping paper because I happened to have the exact red tartan plaid style paper on hand. You also want to use fresh batteries so the glow is as strong as it can be to get the full effect.
You could wrap your candles in any type of paper that speaks to you for the holidays -- perhaps a Nativity scene or maybe some snowmen, elves or candy canes?
The vignette was set up just for this post, so I'm sure the candles will move somewhere else before the actual holidays. Which holiday will you make candles for?
Well, that's it for today, friends!
