How to Fill a Clear Vase with Cabbage Leaves

March 22, 2026

There’s something about early spring that makes us want to freshen up everything—and one of the simplest, most charming ways to do that is right on your tabletop. Enter: cabbage leaves in a vase. Yes, cabbage. It’s unexpectedly beautiful, wonderfully budget-friendly, and absolutely perfect for spring and Easter decorating.

Adding natural elements like cabbage leaves to your clear glass vase, in addition to your flowers, elevates your floral arrangement, making it especially perfect for spring and the Easter holiday (if you celebrate).

Why Cabbage Leaves Work (and Why You’ll Love Them)

Cabbage leaves have that soft, ruffled texture that feels almost like fabric, with pale green tones that instantly say spring. They add structure, color, and a slightly whimsical garden feel—without needing a ton of flowers.

It’s one of those “how did I not think of this before?” tricks that looks elevated but takes minutes.

How to Style a Vase with Cabbage Leaves

This is the kind of decor DIY that feels effortless but looks like you planned it for weeks.

What you’ll need:

  •   A clear glass vase (cylinder shapes work best)
head of Trader Joe's green cabbage

  • Fresh cabbage leaves (green or even purple for contrast)
  • Your favorite spring flowers (think tulips, ranunculus, or daffodils)
  • Water

Step-by-step:

  1. Fill the vase with water.
  2. Line the inside of your vase by pressing the largest cabbage leaves (from the outside of the head) against the glass. Overlap them slightly so there are no gaps.
  3. Add your flowers—the stems will sit inside, hidden behind the leaves. I used peony tulips, ranunculus and hydrangea.

The result? A lush, layered look where the vase itself becomes part of the arrangement.

Styling Ideas for Easter

This trick works beautifully across different decor styles—from cottagecore to classic to modern farmhouse.

  • Soft & Romantic: Pair cabbage leaves with blush tulips and white ranunculus.
  • Fresh & Minimal: Use all white flowers with crisp green leaves for a clean, airy look.
  • Playful Easter Table: Add speckled eggs, woven baskets, or a linen runner for a seasonal tablescape.

A Few Pro Tips

  • Use outer cabbage leaves—they’re larger and more flexible.
  • If the leaves won’t stay put, add a smaller inner vase to hold them in place.
  • Keep everything fresh by changing the water every couple of days, and use flower preservative if you have some.
  • Try purple cabbage for a moodier, more unexpected twist (would probably be great for a fall floral arrangement).

Why This Trick Feels So Special

There’s a quiet magic in using something humble—like cabbage—and turning it into something beautiful. It feels resourceful, a little nostalgic, and perfectly in tune with the season of renewal.

If you’re setting your table this spring/Easter, this is one of those small touches that makes everything feel thoughtful, layered, and just a little bit different—in the best way.

And honestly? It’s the kind of detail guests notice.
