If you love thrifted home decor -- vintage brass accessories like monkey decor -- plus creative ways to decorate with faux Boston ferns -- this styling tip is for you. I recently styled a thrifted vintage wire bowl with a monkey figurine base using layered faux fabric Boston fern fronds from the thrift store. It instantly became one of those collected, designer-looking pieces that makes a room feel finished.
Vintage animal decor -- including monkeys -- is having a moment right now, and pairing it with realistic greenery gives it that classic English-inspired, Palm Beach, eclectic look that feels timeless instead of trendy.
The Vintage Monkey Bowl Find
You know those thrift store finds that make you stop mid-aisle? This was one of them.
Tucked on a lower shelf between mismatched candle holders and dusty baskets was a vintage wire bowl perched on top of a monkey figure. It had that slightly whimsical, slightly grandmillennial look that immediately caught my eye. The metal had aged beautifully, the proportions were perfect, and the monkey detail gave it just enough personality without feeling kitschy.
Once I got it home I got to work by removing all the faux fruit and berries, pine cones and flowers. I saved a few faux pomegranates and berry picks for future projects.
Why Faux Boston Ferns Worked Perfectly
At first I wasn't entirely sure how I wanted to style the bowl. Fruit felt too predictable. Moss balls just didn't look right. Then I remembered a bundle of faux fabric Boston fern fronds I had picked up secondhand months ago. (I had them on my radar, so of course it took me a hot minute to finally find some.)
Perfect.
Boston ferns have that soft, layered shape that naturally spills outward, which works beautifully with an open wire bowl. The faux fabric leaves also have a slightly vintage look themselves -- not too glossy or plastic-looking -- which helped everything feel cohesive.
I highly recommend fabric ferns.
The combination instantly gave the piece that collected, conservatory-style charm I love. (As if I have a conservatory lol.)
The Secret to Making Faux Greenery Look Expensive
The key with thrifted faux greenery is fullness and movement.
Instead of placing the fern stems upright like a bouquet, I bent and layered the fronds so they draped naturally over the edges of the wire bowl. Some curve downward, some lift slightly upward, and a few extend asymmetrically to keep it from looking stiff.
That loose, imperfect arrangement is what makes faux ferns look believable.
I have real Boston ferns on my patio all summer and I love them!
Why Vintage Monkey Decor Works So Well Right Now
Monkey decor has quietly become one of those recurring design details that keeps popping up in beautifully layered interiors. It works especially well in:
-
Palm Beach style homes
-
English country interiors
-
Collected eclectic spaces
-
Chinoiserie-inspired rooms (me!)
-
Traditional homes with a sense of humor
The trick is balance.
A single monkey accent can feel playful and sophisticated at the same time, especially when it's surrounded by classic elements like greenery, books, brass, linen, or blue-and-white ceramics.

My wire monkey bowl now sits on the dining room table and the faux fern softens the entire vignette beautifully.
Don’t Overlook Thrifted Faux Florals and Greenery
One of my favorite budget decorating tips is always checking the floral section at thrift stores and estate sales. People donate surprisingly good faux stems all the time (as well as wreaths you can give new life to) -- especially fabric florals!
I look for:
-
Fabric leaves instead of shiny plastic
-
Natural color variation
-
Wired stems for shaping
-
Fuller fronds with soft movement
-
Slight fading that makes them look more realistic
A quick dusting and reshaping is usually all they need as far as upkeep.
The Finished Look
What I love most about this arrangement is that it feels layered and personal instead of store-bought. The vintage monkey bowl already had so much character, but adding the thrifted faux Boston fern fronds gave it life and softness.
It’s proof that some of the best home decor moments come from combining unexpected secondhand finds in creative ways.
And honestly? Decorating this way is so much more fun than clicking “add to cart” on something everyone else already has.
As many of you know, I'm a thrifting gal all the way!
