Burlap Monogram Wall Art

I am SO happy to be writing this post!  I know I said our internet problems were over a few days ago but I was WRONG!  We lost our internet connection again for the umpteenth time and it was more than frustrating.  I'm not going to jinx myself by celebrating or anything here, but the fact that I'm writing this post should tell you something.  Now on to more pressing matters!


I picked up this beauty at Club G.W. a few months ago for $2.99, not knowing what I'd do with her but knowing that I'd think of something!  From a distance she looks OK, but up close and personal you could tell that she needed a small facelift.


Trust me, really.

The picture doesn't reflect it, but it really wasn't the kind of chippy, shabby that I love.  It was just yuk, a very dull white.  It actually looked more dirty than anything.

I loved it for the shape, details and the sweet back side of it.


See what I mean?  Pretty cute.  Anyway, it had no back or anything, so I had to figure out what I wanted to do with it.  At first I was going to make it a small corkboard.  But that would have been somewhat of a pain since the cork would have to be really thin to fit in there and there was no original backing with it. 

In comes Wal-Mart.  Did you know that Wal-Mart is selling fabric again?  I know I mentioned it here when I bought some cotton duck material for my grainsack pillow.  But even better than that, they're selling B-U-R-L-A-P for $2.97 a yard!  That made my thrifty frugal self very happy. 

First I applied two coats of Krylon white spray paint.  Once it dried, I then proceeded to do a rubbing of the back of the frame in order to create a template for the backing.



I then traced the rubbing onto a piece of old corrugated cardboard I had left from another old frame, and cut it out.  Once I had the oval backing completed, I cut out a piece of burlap to fit over it.  I used spray adhesive to attach them to each other.  Add one fabric adhesive monogram I got on clearance at Jo-Ann's and voila.


What do you think?  I know I've been saying this a lot lately, but, I love it!  I really do.


I think it goes well with some of my other burlap decor, too.  Right now it's hanging next to the fireplace, but I think it's too small for that wall.  Perhaps the newly remodeled powder room is just the place?  I'll share that later.


All told, I'm thinking it was $5.00 well spent.  And you?

The last few weeks have been a real pain without internet, printing capabilities, etc. but I think we're finally out of the woods.  I'd share the details here but they'd just bore you to death.  So, on to more interesting things!

Back before my husband and I got married (this December it'll be our 16th!) he purchased this darling little country-style footstool.  The original fabric was a county-style print, later reupholstered by me sometime after we wed.  I remember scoring a pile of "tapestry" squares at a flea market, and I put most of them to good use, as evidenced here.




Like all good things, the life of this baby had come to an end.  I was tired of it.  Tastes change over the years and we have to roll with it, lest we get stuck in, say, the 80's (!). And there's nothing better than already having the materials at hand and breathing new life into them.  So watch and learn.


First I removed the old cushion cover, but not without some struggle.  I used a screwdriver to pull up the staples and a pair of pliers to pull the staples out of the wood.


For some reason, there were 60, yes, 60 staples in all.


Once that was done, I just used the old cover as a template for the new one.


And the best news of all?  Jo-Ann's is selling a printed burlap!  {Thank you Betsy at
Coastal Colors!}  There are two styles.  One has an old key stamped all over it and the other is more of a French postcard/script look which I love.  I chose that one.   And the rest is history.

And yes, I painted the thing, but then what did you expect?  I used  Benjamin Moore Cameo White and lightly distressed it.  I'm thankful for my good fortune in snagging up the fabric.  Maybe you can, too!  (It was $7.99 a yard so I used my 40% off coupon and the fabric for this stool ended up costing about $2.40.)  Okay, I'll stop gushing now.

Last week's party was full of great finds and re-do's.  Once again you all amaze me.  And believe me, I'm so glad that there are other people like myself out there who love to thrift and repurpose!  You inspire me each week to be better and do more.  So let's see a few fabs from last week.

Bathroom Reveal Part 1

When all this began, (yes, way back in March) after the septic back-up water incident originating from our first floor powder room, who knew it would take almost 8 months for our house to be fully restored back to normal?  For those of you who don't know the sad details, the water had damaged the bathroom, the hall, foyer, kitchen, eating area and basement ceiling directly beneath. 

If you've ever had water damage in your home then you know the drill -- they come in and rip out the drywall and baseboards up to about a foot and a half from the floor.  And then they try to make everything just like it was.  Ha.  I don't think any house is ever fully restored back to just like it was.  But you have to roll with it or you'll go nuts.  Take it from me.

Here is what it looked like after the flood.


I'm sorry that  I don't have any "before" photos, but who knew the bathroom was going to be demolished?




The blue thing in the bottom corner of the picture is one of those really large industrial size fans that they run nonstop for days in the hopes of mitigating any drywall damage.  It sounds like there' a a jet taking off in your living room.  I. Kid. You. Not.








  Pretty depressing.  I never did like pedestal sinks, so what say we change it?  But that's for another day.

There are a few things I'd like to share with you about the bathroom redo, but today it's all about the sconces.  When we moved in the sconces were run of the mill 1980's cheapy brass sconces.  (I didn't know just HOW cheapy they were until I started looking for new ones.)  I learned that there are so many sconces out there it's mind boggling.  And that it's really painful to scope out sconces at three different big box home improvement stores with three bored kids in tow.  NOT recommended.

I absolutely fell in love with this one on Pinterest.  But it's not exactly Mr. CBD's cup of tea.  Source:  My Pinterest.


I also love this one, but Restoration Hardware is a bit too pricey for our budget.

  We went with a more traditional type, but I think it works. {Especially with the Club G.W. mirror I revamped here.}


I like the cup facing down, but Mr. CBD likes them turned up toward the ceiling.  I agreed to go with his preference after he reminded me just how few decorating decisions I have actually allowed him to weigh in on!  {Sorry, honey.}  Best of all, they were really reasonably priced.  Unlike these.
A pair of these cost more than $100.00 on line.  We paid well below that.


So sorry for the awful photos.  It's REALLY HARD to get a good shot of such a SMALL space that has no natural light!

Well I hope you like the new sconces as much as I do.  I'm saving the {original} Ralph Lauren wallpaper for another post.  And the vanity.  And my love of beadboard.

Club G.W. {Goodwill} No. 19, Features and the Goodwill Happy Dance

I've been holding off sharing one of my MOST FAVORITE CLUB G.W. FINDS thus far, what with the floor remodel chaos going on in my house lately.  But now I'm ready to share!  Warning:  If you're the jealous type you might just hate envy me for this!


I have my Chickadee #1 to thank for spying this little beauty as soon as we walked into one of my favorite Club G.W.'s. I have to say that I saw it and thought to myself that it must be for customers to sit on because it looked brand new and probably not for sale. (Does that ever really happen at Goodwill? What was I thinking?)
But she made me proud and pounced on that baby like a real thrifter (she had a good teacher!).  Once I saw the $4.99 price tag I was ecstatic. I brought it up to the register and asked them to hold it for me while I shopped. They said I had better pay for it then and there because they couldn't hold it for me if someone else came up and wanted it! Well that was a no-brainer. We paid and left, with me feeling almost like I was stealing something! (I'm not kidding.)

I swear, pillows are the most versatile accessory!  Remember these?

And I love to incorporate my grainsacks wherever I can!

In case you've been living under a rock never seen these types of chairs before, they're called Parsons chairs and they're really expensive (by my standards).  Take a look.



 


$4.99 indeed.  Some people might only use them as dining room chairs, but I think they can go just about anywhere.  I think they work well especially in corners. Or hallways. Or foyers. Of course it would have been great to find more than one, but I've gotta have faith that there are other ones out there somewhere just waiting for me to find them!

Now this is what I call Thrifty Chic.  She used an old crib mattress spring as a memo/inspiration board.   I have wanted to do this for a while but was afraid Mr. CBD would think I was crazy!  I also wanted to "rustify" it in some way first....any ideas?


Checkers, anyone?  This table went from ho-hum thrift store table to quite a masterpiece, wouldn't you say?  And the best part?  It only cost $5.00.
