Our Hopeful Home: Thrifted Barn Wood Picture Frame and Botanical Prints

Welcome to this month's Thrift Store Challenge, where my friends and I challenge each other to transform thrift store finds into something different, better and useful. This month I'm sharing a thrifted, whitewashed barn wood picture frame, along with the free botanical prints I used to create a fabulous farmhouse decor accent.

Thrift Store Challenge

The Rules:

Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
There's no monthly theme.
There's no budget to stick to.

I picked up the frame at Goodwill for $3.99, which is more than I usually pay for frames. But I really loved the rustic look of this one. It wasn't until I got it home that I found out it really was made from barn wood by a local wood worker. I knew because he left his business card inside. Score! I just could not imagine why someone would donate it to Goodwill -- I loved it, so I guess it was my lucky day.

Unfortunately, I didn't take a "before" shot of the front of the frame prior to painting it white. Suffice it to say that it looked very dark, just like the back of the frame looks here.

And here she is after dry brushing her with some white chalk paint. Totally transformed in my opinion. While there's always a place for natural barn wood I just wanted to give this frame a little pick-me-up for spring.

These four botanical prints were provided by Magnolia Magazine for free last year. I put them aside, knowing I would find a place to use them eventually. Little did I know I'd find a perfect frame.

Allium and muscari, otherwise known as garlic and grape hyacinth. Such beautiful flowers!

Daffodil and hyacinth, two quintessentially spring flowers.

I picked my faves and inserted them into the frame.

When they fit perfectly I knew it was meant to be.

The frame just happened to fit inside one of my tobacco baskets.

It was the perfect addition to my spring decor in the dining room.

I swear I love those farmhouse shelves more and more every day. And the added lemons just add color and joy.

Lemons in the pot are also from Dollar Tree, and the lemon tree topiary was a Wal-Mart steal!

Tobacco baskets, boxwood wreaths, ironstone and buffalo check lemon tree wall art are a more than perfect display of farmhouse decor.

Lemon topiaries, or topiaries of any kind for that matter, are extremely expensive these days. I was super happy to find these lemon topiaries for not much more than ten dollars at my local Wal-mart.
