Gold Leaf Rub 'n Buff Magic: Thrift Store Mirror Transformation

May 27, 2022

For years now I've read about how awesome Rub 'n Buff is for DIY home decor projects. And today I'm sharing how I used some Gold Leaf Rub 'n Buff to transform a thrift store mirror.

Rub 'n Buff comes in 12 metallic colors. I chose the color gold leaf, based on the many DIY transformations I've seen done by other bloggers over the years. I've always thought gold leaf Rub 'n Buff results in the most high-end look.

Here's the thrift store mirror I got at Goodwill for $5.99. It was in perfect condition with the words Illinois Moulding Co. on the back, not unlike the huge gold mirror I featured in my How To Use 3-M Claw Drywall Picture Hanger tutorial.

It doesn't look as obvious in the pictures as it does in real life but the frame is pretty plastic-y looking.

However, I fell in love with the detail.

Between the plastic-y look and the drab, dark, dirty gold color I had my work cut out for me.

I picked it up at Hobby Lobby. Gold leaf seems to be a favorite shade because I had a hard time finding it on the store shelves. You can also purchase gold leaf Rub 'n Buff online.

After cleaning the frame with a damp cloth, I began applying the Rub 'n Buff with a small paint brush.

I "painted" a section, and then used a clean cotton cloth to "buff" the area. I then continued like that all the way around the frame.

And I was super excited with how it turned out.
