Welcome to the third installment of The Mindful Christmas Home! Today's focus: getting back to basics and pure joy during the holidays - a nostalgic Little Debbie Christmas Tree Trifle Dessert recipe.

This Christmas trifle is great to make for yourself, as well as gifts for friends and family!

Making Christmas-themed treats and desserts every year is one way of letting your loved ones know how much you care for and appreciate them. And this year I've decided on making just a few baked goods to share -- which makes it easier to focus on who you're making them for, as well as on the more important why.

It's a regular Christmas tradition. But starting new Christmas traditions can have an impact as well, and can bring you even closer together. And it can also be fun!

Since 1985, Little Debbie has been making Christmas dreams come true for fans of their iconic Christmas Tree CakesLast year I became one of those fans.

After seeing various people making Little Debbie Christmas Tree Trifle desserts on social media, I knew I had to try. It's very different from the usual array of traditional Christmas cookies, fruit cakes, gingerbread men and Christmas candy (insert your traditional treats here).

Growing up it was sugar cookies in the shape of trees and stars and candy canes and wreaths, made from a cookie press that my mom let up help with. I loved dusting the red and green sugar on top. But she never made trifle. Nor had I until last Christmas.

After reading up on a number of trifle recipes (all fairly similar), I created a mash-up recipe, with a small twist. I must say that my family was dubious, but it actually ended up being a hit. This dessert is not for the faint of heart -- it packs a pretty sweet wallop, but we found it oh- so-yummy.

Sadly I don't have pictures of the process since I spaced last year and only remembered to take pictures after the fact. However, I provide a printable PDF version of the recipe at the bottom of this post, and have pictures of the finished product in all its glory.

What's not to like? Beautiful presentation and tasty to boot!

My "twist" is that I decided to place the trees in an upright position, as in a forest. The recipes I came across all had you lay the cakes down flat on the top. But where's the fun in that?

I think the 3-D effect adds a nice (and fun) touch. This dessert will look great on your Christmas table!

To be honest I had never owned a trifle dish and had to buy one specifically for this recipe. So I was doubly happy that it turned out - the trifle dish purchase was not for naught!
