I've mentioned more than a few times that since the kids have grown, Halloween decorating at our house has deteriorated to practically nil. But there are still a few fun themes that I can be convinced to sink my teeth into.
This year's obsession? Witch hat Halloween decor!
As noted in my Savvy Shopper Series #4, while looking for unique Halloween decor, I found a less expensive mossy witch hat than the ones I had been seeing online. The online price I found: $36 apiece, or $108 for three!
The Wal-Mart My Texas House mossy witch hat price? $22.97 each! Between that awesome price and my vintage-inspired transformation, I think this mossy witch hat is one of my most favorite Halloween decor DIY's ever!
Here is the trio of $34 (each) mossy witch hats I found online. Even if I only purchased one, I'd have to pay $8-$10 shipping which would end up costing me over $100.
Here they are in Wal-Mart for $22.97. I thought the super bright green moss would look better if it was in a bit more of a muted tone. And the stem needed a more of a rustic touch. But I knew that I could transform it.
Initially I thought I'd place the cauldron inside another pot or vessel, but I changed my mind and actually decided to use it as is.
First I added some twine to the "stem" of the hat, creating more of a rustic vibe. Then I added clumps of brown moss to the witch hat with hot glue, creating a much more muted palette.
Last but not least, I tied a black satin ribbon around the base of the stem for added effect.
I think I'll be adding fairy lights to it as well, which will give it a nice warm glow at night. The orange tapers with spider webs on them are from Dollar Tree a few years ago.
I later found ANOTHER My Texas House witch hat from Wal-Mart that I also fell in love with -- and this one was made of wicker! Be still my heart. . . . .
If I had found this one first I might have bought a few of them for a cute display and completely skipped the moss one.
Do you decorate for Halloween? If you do, is it spooky, or more whimsical? Would you ever use witch hats? I hope I can buy more wicker ones next year!
Well, that's it for today, friends!
